A newly proposed two-component vectorial parabolic equation is generalised and then applied to the study of low-order modes in oversized lossy waveguides of arbitrary cross section whose axis is a smooth space curve. The eigenvalue problem is solved analytically for rectangular guides and numerically by means of the finite-element method for arbitrary cross section. Asymptotic and numerical results are presented for the attenuation and field distribution in the cross section of the waveguides. These results extend the known ones in the literature for the special case of straight oversized lossy waveguides to smoothly curved ones.
