Ongoing Trade War Takes Toll on LNG Cargo Flows From US to China

The extended trade spat between the US and China is creating hurdles for LNG trade between the countries - and for those in the industry who want to get new deals done. While the US is the world's fastest-growing LNG supplier and China its largest potential market, exports to China have become collateral damage in the ongoing tariff dispute, with LNG sales plunging in the first three months of 2019 versus year-earlier levels. Data collected by Energy Intelligence show that China took in just 2.7% of all US LNG exported, or three cargoes, in the first quarter, compared with 21 % in the same period of 2018 with a total of 16 cargoes.
