N.D. Gets Creative Amid Scramble To Curb Gas Flaring in Bakken Shale

After missing state-mandated gas-capture targets for the third month in a row, and with just weeks left before flaring restrictions get even tighter, North Dakota's E&P industry is eyeing a unique solution to address the glut coming out of the Bakken Shale: storing the unprocessed gas in deep rock formations. Last week, the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) approved a $140,000 project that will evaluate the possibility of capturing produced Bakken gas that would otherwise be flared and injecting it some 7,000 feet below the surface.
