The 2014-15 oil and gas price collapse took a toll on all producing states, but nowhere as much as Alaska. If any state can be said to have a one-crop economy, it would be Alaska, with its 40 years of North Slope oil production and its decades-long effort to monetize its vast gas reserves. That overreliance on energy as an economic engine has caught up to the state, which has had its credit rating reduced seven times since early 2015.
