California to Shut Last Nuclear Power Plant, Looks to Replace Gas Peakers

It's now certain that the last nuclear facility in the Golden State will be shut by 2025 once its federal operating licenses expire. Earlier this month, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a final decision to close the state's single largest power plant, Pacific Gas & Electric's (PG&E) two-unit Diablo Canyon, which alone produces about 10% of the state's power. The 2,400-megawatt capacity plant is located near San Luis Obispo on the central California coast. PG&E said it decided to close the aging facility because of the escalating cost to keep it in operation.
