The US boasts some of the world's most expansive coastlines with high wind currents, but not much of an offshore wind industry to show for it - especially compared to the fast-growing business in Europe. But the Washington-based American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) believes the US is finally poised to catch up. So far, the only wind project operating in US waters is the five-turbine, 30-megawatt Block Island facility off the coast of Rhode Island (NGW Aug. 14'17). For many years, high hopes had been built up around the Cape Wind project off the Massachusetts coast, but the project was eventually canceled.
