The South African rush-lily Bobartia indica L. is a rhizoma-tous, evergreen perennial endemic to fynbos of the south-western Cape. A description and details of its history, taxonomy, distribution, habitat and cultivation are provided, accompanied by habitat photographs.The Physic Garden at Oxford, founded in 1621 and now the oldest Botanic Garden in Britain, received its first Curator, the German botanist Jacob Bobart the Elder (1599-1680) in 1642. Bobart was the author of Calalogus plantarum horti medici Oxoniensis, alist of the 1600 trees and plants cultivated at the garden, published in 1648. He was succeeded in 1680 by his son Jacob Bobart the Younger (1641-1719) who became Professor of Botany at Oxford University, and the genus was named by Linnaeus in conjunction for Bobart the Elder and the Younger.
