You sit on a stool next to a patient's chair in the hefnodialysis unit preparing to start the dialysis treatment, and you ask how the patient is doing. You walk into a hospital room or a clinic exam room and ask how the patient is feeling today. The question is - do you really want to know the answer or is your question really meant to convey just a message of hello? How often does the patient start to answer the question you asked only to have you interrupt? Maybe you think you know what the patient is about to say. Maybe you've heard the same words numerous times before, and you think you have the answer. Or maybe you've just got a to-do list and a clock running through your mind, and you've got more work today than time, so your attention is on what you have to do for the next patient rather than on what the patient in front of you is saying.
