Lachnagrostis (Poaceae) in the Highlands of New Guinea

The Australian grass, Lachnagrostis oemula (R.Br.) Trin. is identified among numerous collections of L filiformis (G.Forst.) Trin. from Papua New Guinea and Western New Guinea. Both species are confined to sub-alpine grasslands at elevations of 1700-3700 m, where rainfall and humidity are high and temperatures are relatively low and uniform throughout the year. While L. filiformis is most commonly found on human-disturbed sites, L. aemula appears to be associated with more natural sites: a similar habitat preference to that found in Australia.
