Commission launches public consultation on RED II review, forestry biomass: European Union

The European Commission launched a public consultation on the review of its Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). It will also review sustainability criteria for forestry biomass that was introduced by RED II. Interested stakeholders have until 9 February 2021 to partake in the consultation. With the European Green Deal, the Commission aims for the European Union to become carbon neutral by 2050. Currently, the EU has a target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% by 2020, compared with 1990 levels, and by 40% by 2030. In order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the Commission has proposed a reduction of GHG emissions of 55% by 2030.
