Transmission designs and their associated gears once remained the same for decades, but now they change every six to eight years. For greater efficiency and quieter engines, modem transmissions can now have as many as 10 gears that often must be machined individually and shipped simultaneously. As a result, gear manufacturers must produce more types of gears in smaller batches without any reduction in overall volume, all while meeting automakers' demands for shorter turnaround times, lower costs and higher quality.
