Six university teams from around the world met at the 2017 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO to compete in Phase II of the 13th annual SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition. Sixteen teams from the United States, Canada, India and South America began the competition at their schools in the fall of 2016. Each team submitted an operational feasibility report for a sand and gravel mine in Phase I of the competition. A panel of mining industry judges then reviewed the entries, and the top six teams were invited to Phase II in Denver, where teams were given an expansion to the initial problem. In Phase II, the level of difficulty was increased, and the teams were given less than 48 hours to create a final solution to present to the judges. The judges and the Student Design Competition Committee were incredibly impressed with the work done by all students in both phases.
