The following is a response to a question forwarded by Martin Morrison about the native units for weather reports, some of which end up being presented to media audiences by TV meteorologists. METAR is the standard worldwide weather reporting code used to transmit observational weather data across the global telecommunications system. It is a standardized format, developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which allows it to be understood throughout the world. The USMA adopted METAR codes in 1996, replacing older coding systems that were not used worldwide.
