Traumatic shame affects in the mirror of countertransference

Mentally repelled feelings of shame play an essential role in almost every treatment. Especially the group of traumatic toxic shame affects confronts the therapist with major treatment-related challenges. This so-called early shame can neither be reflected nor spoken. It is expressed and executed in the form of shame scenarios (enactments) in the sense of an unconscious enactment between the partners of interaction. The present article is intended as a clinical orientation aid to describe a prototypical gestalt of countertransference reactions, which is typical in the psychogenetic context of early attachment trauma with overwhelming shame experience. The correlation between the traumatizing shameful introjection and the corresponding countertransference variants is examined with the help of brief case examples. A therapeutic recommendation is to work through as a therapist's one's own autobiographically determined shame fate and to make one's own shame profile subjectively recognizable. This can facilitate empathic understanding of the patient, in the sense of an initial starting point.
