Pirelli Tire claims to have totally revolutionized the technologies and methods of tire production, reducing the processing phases from the traditional 14 to only three. Called the Modular Integrated Robotized System (MIRS), the manufacturing technology recently earned Pirelli the prestigious Frost & Sullivan Market Engineering Technology Innovation Award. MIRS is a software-based system that controls the manufacturing process from order inception to delivery. With MIRS, tires are no longer assembled in successive batch operations. They are built continuously by robots directly around drums, which the machines pass on from one "mechanical hand" to the next. MIRS robots, working at an unprecedented speed for this industry, complete the entire production cycle from compounding to finished product, without interruption, without intermediate handling or storage phases, and without wasted energy.
