Westward Ho! Musing on Mathematics and Mechanics

The last issue of Mathematics Today contained Part 1 of a Westward Ho! feature [1] inspired by my visit some years ago to the now defunct transatlantic communications exhibition at the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station. We learned how this central plateau of Cornwall's Lizard peninsula, mainland UK's southernmost land mass, has various historical connections to the technological development of transcontinental communications -from long-distance radio demonstrations, subsea cable operations, to satellite up- and downlinks.
