Efficient Ways to Fill Space

Which partitioning of three-dimensional space into cells of equal volume has minimal surface area? Or, what is the most efficient foam structure? No one knows the answer, though for over 100 years the most efficient foam was wrongly thought to be an octahedron with its corners chopped off. A historical summary of this and related packing problems is presented, along with open questions.
