Renault Avantime Has All-SMC Exterior Body

Building on the successful concept of the composite-bodied Renault Espace, comes the Renault Avantime. All exterior panels are molded in SMC, according to The European Alliance for SMC. Renault designers chose an SMC solution in preference to steel and aluminium, for a number of important reasons: lower entry level investment for a smaller volume vehicle; greater flexibility in styling; lower tooling costs that facilitated more frequent and economical style changes and modifications; lower production costs through the use of integrated one-piece moldings; molded parts that were lower in weight, plus corrosion free and with high resistance to minor impacts.
