The Orange County Transportation Authority in southern California unveiled its fleet of 10 new hydrogen fuel cell electric buses at the end of January, along with the largest transit-operated hydrogen fueling station in the US. The Xcelsior Charge H2 heavy-duty transit buses were supplied by New Flyer of America Inc, a subsidiary of global bus manufacturer NFI Group [FCB, May 2019, p2]. The buses feature an 85 kW fuel cell from Ballard Power Systems, and offer a range in excess of 265 miles (425 km). Fiedler Group engineered upgrades to maintenance facilities to safely service the new buses. The buses will be strategically integrated into the OCTA fleet to operate in communities serving disadvantaged populations, including Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, Santa Ana, and Westminster. OCTA was the first large public transit agency in southern California to operate a hydrogen fuel cell bus, debuting a pilot programme in 2016 [June 2016, p2].
