Preliminary evidence supports a range of speech sound interventions, but higher-quality studies are needed1

What is the quality of evidence for speech sound interventions with preschool-aged children?Design: Systematic review (pre-registered with PROSPERO) Data sources: The authors searched 18 databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from inception to search date. Search terms were identified collectively by the study team, then supplemented with additional terms from key papers and consultation with information specialists. Ninety search terms were generated, including terms related to study group demographics (e.g. child, toddler), diagnosis (e.g. speech delay, speech intelligibility), and study design (e.g. randomized controlled trial, placebo.) Study selection and assessment; Inclusion criteria for studies were that they must: (a) include a study sample comprising at least 80% children aged 2;0-5;11, (b) include children diagnosed with or at risk of speech and language impairment without co-occurring impairments, (c) be an empirical evaluation of an intervention, (d) use at least one primary outcome measure that addressed speech. There were no inclusion or exclusion criteria imposed with regards to study design.
