Our economy is increasingly dominated by technology. There's no clearer indication of this than looking at the listing of the largest companies in the world. Currently, the top five are U.S. technology companies (Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet - the Google parent and Facebook) with a combined market capitalization of almost $4 trillion. As recently as 2011, only one technology company, Apple, was in the top five. Emerging technology companies like Uber, Airbnb and Square are on track to revolutionize key industries.
