The fire service has a long and storied past within the pages of FireRescue. From its founding by the late James O. Page, FireRescue's role has evolved into a credible voice for the fire service through its many tremendous authors and contributors throughout the years. The fire service has undergone exponential change since FireRescue was founded, and it continues to do so. We have transcended EMS as the original, dichotomous service demand identifier and as the fire service's alter ego in general interest. Ask any new firefighters what they do at the fire department these days, and they'll be able to rattle off myriad other services that they deem just as important: community risk reduction, technical and water rescues, hazardous materials, community paramedicine, and now tactical EMS in the form of active shooter and terrorism response.
