Managing staff who are remoteAs the coronavirus bore down on the nation, the Prime Minister told us to go home and work there. So, we took advantage of the IT infrastructure available to us and off we went, with laptops and office chairs in tow. Business staff everywhere retreated indoors, with support from their IT teams, they set up for work. But of course, we must consider that the majority of these employees are accustomed to working and operating in an office environment. There, they have other staff to interact with and a line manager to help them with problems, motivation and direction. The developed work ethos that functions well at the office is not necessarily maintained at home. For many it is a challenge and requires significantly more mentoring, in order to understand the difficulties and distractions of remote working, and to remain effective while doing so. Like most difficult situations, the key to resolving them is communication - don't leave your colleagues out on a limb, keep all channels of communication open.
