Anesthesia Recommendations for Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a nonablative, adaptable, and reversible therapy that has become a standard treatment for movement disorders.In this therapy, long-term electric stimulation is delivered to deep brain targets through an insulated lead and an implantable pulse generator (IPG) (Figs 1 and 2). Although DBS was initially used to treat chronic pain conditions, the current indications approved by the Food and Drug Administration include essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, and dystonia.
