Over the next decade, NASA's Artemis program will lay the foundations for a sustained long-term presence on the Moon's surface. Derived from the Greek goddess of the Moon and twin sister to Apollo, whose namesake program first brought crews to the Moon 50 years ago, the Artemis program will send the first woman and next man to the lunar south pole by 2024 and establish sustainable exploration with commercial and international partners by 2028.
