Matters Related to Motor Oil Standards

Last October, the American Petroleum Institute (API) introduced the latest engine oil performance standards, ILSAC GF-5 and API SN. When introduced, oils meeting ILSAC GF-5 and its predecessor GF-4 could display the API Starburst. As of October 1 of this year, engine oils licensed against GF-5 are the only ones eligible to display the API Starburst. Some GF-4 oils packaged before October 1 carrying the Starburst can probably still be found on store shelves, but over the next few months they will be replaced by GF-5 oils. ILSAC GF-5 is designed to provide improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, more stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels. More than 1,300 brands are now licensed against GF-5.
