A rare case acute abdomen secondary to rupture of a Krukenberg tumor with intra-abdominal hemorrhage

Purpose of investigation: Krukenberg tumors are malignant metastases to the ovaries. Only 1-2% of all ovarian tumors are Krukenberg tumors, and these tumors most commonly affect middle-aged women. Additionally, cases of acute abdomen due to rupture of Krukenberg tumors are rarely reported in the literature. Materials and Methods: The authors here present a rare case of acute abdomen secondary to rupture of a Krukenberg tumor with intra-abdominal hemorrhage in a 62-year-old woman, and review the computed tomography findings. Results: The authors performed exploratory laparotomy with salpingo-oophorectomy. At the exploratory laparotomy, 2,500 ml of blood and ascites and a ruptured right ovarian mass with active intra-abdominal hemorrhage were found. Postopcratively, the patient's condition was stable. Conclusion: Rupture of a Krukenberg tumor with intra-abdominal hemorrhage or ovarian torsion may present as acute abdomen. Despite its rarity, this diagnosis should be considered in women presenting with acute abdomen and ovarian tumors and hemoperitoneum.
