At the 2009 SAE Congress in Detroit, General Motors formally announced its new Dexos~(TM) specifications. You may be more familiar with its draft name - GEOS. There are actually two products under this specification, Dexos~(TM)l for gasoline engines and Dexos~(TM)2 which is good for both gasoline and diesel engines. The Dexos~(TM)2 specification does not meet the North American fuel economy requirements and is primarily intended for use in Europe - it is the Dexos~(TM)l Spec that is intended for North America. Beginning with the 2011 model year, GM will require the use of Dexos~(TM)1 for all gasoline-powered vehicles sold in North America. GM will not be recommending GF-5 oils.
