ILSAC GF-5 Nears Reality

After several years of Infineum reporting on the new ILSAC GF-5 specification, the industry has now completed efforts to define and introduce this new quality level into North America. The new specification will provide a significant improvement in fuel economy as well as emission system and overall engine protection. This demanding new specification will allow OEMs to deliver new engine technology into the marketplace, which may place an even greater burden on lubricating oils to give the required engine protection. For the existing fleet, it will offer more protection than provided by ILSAC GF-4 oils, which represented a steep change in performance when introduced in 2004. Overall, the industry is expected to spend more than $100 million in testing costs to deliver this new technology.
