Growth of Tea Plantation in Duars and its Effects on the Eco-System

摘要

The term 'Duars' in Sanskrit stands for passes or entrances and there were 18 entrances to Bhutan Himalaya-7 in Assam and 11 in Bengal. Following British annexation Jalpaiguri district was formed in 1869 with western Duars except Kalim-pong. Suitableclimatic conditions led to tea cultivation resulting in a massive loss of jungle cover and associated ecological disturbance through cutting of forests, use of fertilizers and pesticides, the use of fossil fuel and electricity in tea manufacturing wherethe impact primarily affected the flora and fauna. From the positive point in reference to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which aims at the enhancement of the targeted level of carbon sequestration tea plays a very active role because its C0_2 sequestration is very high in comparison to other plants. With the introduction of organic cultivation soil is safeguarded increasing productivity and eliminating the harmful need of pesticides.
