Despite experiencing between 2,800 and 3,500 hours of sunshine in any given year-with a total of 8,760 hours in each 365-day rotation around the sun-East Africa's solar energy potential has yet to be fully exploited. But in this region, unlike so many others around the world,it's not fossil fuels that dominate the energy mix.Biomass and hydropower remain the largest sources of energy powering homes and companies across Tanzania,Kenya,Rwanda and Uganda. As of 2017,the combined population of these four countries was 162mn,the majority of whom still lack access to electricity at home.A large proportion of those connected to power consume electricity from hydropower plants, according to data compiled by the World Bank. However, solar technology is evolving, and off-grid solar generating options are expanding.
