Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro’s government is respond- ing to tighter US sanctions by cracking down on the opposition and defying Washington by signing new contracts with Russia and China. The political confict in the Opec country is entering a more ominous stage. Maduro has withdrawn delegates from Norway-brokered negotiations with his opponents in Barbados after Washington on 5 August imposed new restrictions on Venezuelan fnances. Maduro also ordered the supreme court and an electoral council to charge national assembly speaker Juan Guaido and opposition lawmakers with treason. The US and many other countries recognise Guaido as Venezuela’s interim president.
