Chinese domestic spot thermal coal prices retreated in the week to 4 April amid tepid demand from utilities ahead of a public holiday in the country on 5 April.According to data published by coal industry association the CCTD,average coal consumption at the six major coastal power plants rose to around 710,000t/d in late March but then started to retreat.Consumption was pegged at 663,700t/d on 4 April.Hydropower generation in south China has also increased more quickly compared with last year and this has put some downward pressure on thermal power.According to data published by the national bureau of statistics,hydropower output in January-February increased by 6.6pc compared with a year earlier,while thermal power output increased only by 1.7pc during the same period.
