Digitalisation is key to sulphur cap enforcement

Data recorders could be the key to ensure compliance with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) 0.5pc sulphur 2020 cap, the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) said. To comply with the IMO cap, vessels can either burn lowsulphur fuels, LNG or LPG, or install abatement technology known as scrubbers to continue to use high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO). But concerns about how the regulation is going to be enforced are growing, as in international waters flag states are the only authority with powers of enforcement in case of noncompliance.
