ExxonMobil appeals $20mn emissions fine

ExxonMobil is seeking to overturn a record $20mn fine that a federal court ordered it to pay for exceeding air emission limits at the 557,000 b/d refinery in Baytown, Texas. ExxonMobil late on 12 January asked the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals to throw out or reduce the penalty. Environ- mental Texas Citizen Lobby and other environmentalists frst brought the suit in 2010 and sought millions of dollars in fines under the Clean Air Act for what they said were thousands of air emission violations.
