Colombia set to reach record coking coal output

Colombia’s metallurgical coal production is on track to reach a record high 6mn metric tonnes/yr this year, government data show. Coking coal output during the first nine months of this year totaled 4.49mn t, a 46.7pc increase from the same period of 2016, the Ministry of Mines and Energy said in a report. Producers in Latin America’s largest coal exporting nation have been ramping up operations as international prices rose and exporters bought more coal to convert into metallurgic coke. Coking coal exports totaled 1.03mn t from January through September of this year. That was down slightly from 1.2mnt reached in the same period of 2016 because most coking coal is being converted to metallurgic coke before it leaves Colombia.
