US coal generation set record low for May

US coal-fred generation set a record low for May as mitigation eforts for the Covid-19 pandemic decreased power demand. Utilities dispatched 46.5mn MWh of coal power, a 35pc drop from May 2019, the US Energy Information Administra- tion (EIA) said in its latest Electric Power Monthly. That is the second lowest monthly total for coal generation based on EIA records dating back to 1973, lagging April’s 40.6mn MWh.
