Strong Asian grain demand lifts smaller bulkers

Firm demand for Asia-bound grain shipments from the east coast of South America has lifted Panamax and Supramax rates to one-month highs in the Atlantic basin. The US east coast-Rotterdam Panamax freight rate rose by 16pc to $11/metric tonne on 2 December, and the US Gulf coast-east coast India Supramax rate jumped by 13pc to $40.25/t on 4 December, according to Argus prices.
