India’s coke consumption rose 30pc in October

India’s October petroleum coke consumption jumped by more than 30pc from the same month last year, when demand was particularly low. Imports in 2018 were under pressure because of regula- tory concerns, as the Indian Supreme Court considered a ban on coke imports. The court cleared cement companies - the main consumers of coke - to import later that year while blocking other industries. Many cement companies at the time were using alternatives, including high-sulphur US coal.
