FATALITY INVESTIGATION: Electric Power Lines and an Overgrown Tree Prove to Be a Deadly Combination

It should have been a routine spring day. At approximately 9 a.m., a two-man crew from a tree-trimming company arrived at a private residence to clear out brush and trim a tree that was positioned next to a power line. The branches of the tree to be trimmed were growing in close proximity to an adjacent power line. However, both employees on the crew were line clearance tree trimmers who had received specialized training and were permitted to work the OSHA-man-dated minimum approach distance (MAD) of 10 ft. from energized power lines.
