U.S. base oil imports rose in the first three months of this year as Group Ill-quality base oil shipments surged, creating a ripple effect that has impacted the rest of the U.S. market and tied it even more closely to the global market. The U.S. imported an average of 975,000 barrels/month of base oils in this year's first quarter, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It exported an average of 2.22 million barrels/month of base oils during the same period. This contrasts with imports of 772,000 barrels/month in the first quarter of last year and exports of 1.96 million barrels/month. The U.S. market was importing 761,000 barrels and exporting 2.05 million barrels a year ago in July 2011.
