President for a Day

Have you ever heard the old adage, "What would you do if you were president for a day?" I remember telling my dad, "If I become president for a day in our company, I'm gonna buy new delivery trucks for our drivers." As I became more educated and acquainted with the finance side of the business, I soon learned brand new trucks are not nearly as economical as purchasing good used delivery trucks, especially with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology on these newer trucks having sensors that don't like frigid weather. Not good in Calgary, Alberta, where our company is basedl What I really wanted, but didn't quite know how to articulate at the time, was for our delivery trucks to look nicer and make our employees more proud of what they were driving down the road. I learned that the trucks didn't necessarily have to be brand new, and also (and this was really important) if you listen to your employees' wishes, there might be common ground to achieve a better result. In our case, we simply repainted and put updated decals on the trucks.
