Anti-inflammatory effects and treatment of hydro alcoholic extract of medicinal plant Althea officinalis L. for the treatment of Burn wounds

Burn injuries are one of the most important causes of mortality throughout the world. In the present study, the anti-inflammatory and treatment effects of a hydro-alcohol extract of Althea offinials L. were compared with those of silver sulfadiazine after burn injury in rats. Eighteen male rats underwent anesthesia, a second-degree burn was created, and the healing process was studied in three groups (false control, positive control, and treatment with A. officinalis). The administration of treatments and measurement of the wounds by digital image analysis were conducted on alternating days for 19 days. The mean percentages of burn healing in the control, A. officinalis, and silver sulfadiazine groups were 41.126 ± 1.973, 70.245 ± 1.973 and 66.959± 1.973 mm2, respectively. Thus, the most rapid healing of the wounds occurred in the A. officinalis treatment group. The hydro-alcohol extract of A. officinalis had a greater anti-inflammatory effect than silver sulfadiazine, and by reducing the inflation, the extract aided in burn healing.
