Applying the oleckno index (01) in locating a landfill site in Dezful City, Iran

One of the concerns that experts and specialists in environmental issues have is finding a suitable place for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). Given the important factors in selecting a landfill site, finding a suitable place through traditionalmethods is difficult and often impossible. The present study attempts to apply the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Oleckno Index (OI) in order to identify the potential places for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this study, soil and isorain maps of Dezful were prepared through ARC GIS Software. Considering the Oleckno Index (OI) and the level of groundwater, soil type, and rainfall in the city of Dezful, three municipal solid waste landfill sites were located. The results showed thatthe points obtained through the OI varied from 21 to 27 for these three sites, which were acceptable based on the OI ranking and that there was a reasonable proportion between the selected places and OI.
