Slovakia's first aerial tramway, from Tatranska Lomnica to Skalnate Pleso, was opened eighty years ago

ISR REPORT In the 1940s, construction of the reversible from Tatranska Lomnica to Skalnate Pleso, followed by the second stage from Skalnate Pleso to Lomnicky Peak, was a pioneering feat of ropeway engineering. Today one of Slovakia's leading ski areas reaches from Tatranska Lomnica to the saddle at Lomnicke sedlo. In the early 19th century a number of climatic spas were created at an altitude of about 1,000 m on south-facing slopes in the High Tatras. Tatranska Lomnica was the first of these resorts to become accessible by rail with the construction in 1895 of a standard-gage branch line of the Kosice-Bohumin Railway, linking it with the city of Poprad. One year later a steamdriven rack and pinion railway was built to connect the station on the branch line at Strba with the resort of Strbske Pleso.
