A method of sound equalization for sound reproduction that yields a wider equalized area compared with that of the conventional approach is proposed in this paper. In addition to the control of transfer functions from the sound sources to the original receiving points, the derivatives of the transfer functions evaluated at the original receiving points are constrained to be zero. By employing these derivative constraints, the variation of the transfer function in the vicinity of the original points becomes small, resulting in a wider equalized area, which contributes to the robustness of the system in relation to movement of the listener. Moreover, an index useful in finding the optimum control source location, which is obtained by analysing the condition number of the coefficient matrix of the control equation, is also described.
