Intracranial Haemorrhage Misdiagnosed as Non-Accidental Injury: A Case of Neonatal Hepatitis

Introduction: Non-accidental injury in neonate can be difficult to diagnose in forensic scenario. There are numerous causes of intracranial haemorrhage in neonate, and further laboratory analysis is often required to make a correct diagnosis. Objective: To highlight an interesting case of intracranial haemorrhage in newborn, and discuss the literature. Method: We report a case of a premature baby with intracranial haemorrhage. The baby was delivered through a Caesarean section, and died at one day of age. Result: The case was investigated for non-accidental injury head injury, but microbiology of blood showed recent herpes simplex viral infection (HSV) and previous infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV). Conclusion: This interesting case was reported for its rare occurrence of viral infection leading to intracranial haemorrhage in a neonate.
