Strength Reduction Analysis for the Stability of Pile-Slope System

Numerical analyses by the 3D shear strength reduction technique were performed for stability of pile-slope system, in which the pile response and slope stability were considered simultaneously. An internal routine with FLAC3D based on dichotomy was developed to calculate the factor of safety of pile-slope system. The effects of the pile spacing, pile head conditions and pile positions on the safety factor were analyzed. The critical slip surface was found to be divided into two parts when the pile spacing is small, and these two parts gradually get connected with the increase of pile spacing until a clear critical slip surface is formed. Pile head conditions can considerably influence the stability of the piled slope, but this can not be indicated by the limit equilibrium method. The optimal pile position for slope reinforced with one row of piles was found to be located in the middle of the slope.
