ASTM E1928's method for measuring residual circumferential stress in pipes: Correction of a historical misunderstanding

The ASTM E1928 - Standard Practice for Estimating the Approximate Residual Circumferential Stress in Straight Thin-walled tubing - has been in use in different industries, namely the oil industry. In this work, the standard practice was numerically analyzed through the finite element method, by using perfect-round concentric pipes in plain strain conditions and imposing linear-through-the-thickness residual stress. The results for pipe slenderness from 10 to 300 were compared to the standard practice's method and to the original method cited in the standard, developed by Hatfield and Thirkell. The authors showed that the standard equation underestimates actual residual stress level and the error varies enormously with pipe's slendemess, achieving 20% for D/t = 10. On the other hand, the original method's error is very stable with pipe's slendemess, the error remaining with 2% from the actual value. Finally, the ASTM E1928's wording is suggested to be modified for the Hatfield and Thirkell method.
