Nickelickel oxide (Ni/NiO) nanocomposite catalysts were easily prepared using a microwave plasma method in a short time under ambient atmosphere without any post-synthesis heat treatment. Moreover, the synthesis feasibility of a high value carbon material from post-consumer detergent bottle waste was investigated as an alternative to chemical recycling to minimize the disposal problems. The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown by a combination of plastic pyrolysis and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using the resulting Ni/NiO catalyst and waste detergent bottles. The amount of Ni present in the catalyst and its crystallite size could be tailored by varying the exposure time for microwave plasma process. Multi-walled CNTs could be obtained in high yield using the Ni/NiO catalyst prepared in a relatively short exposure time (70 s).
